Here’s why IBM just sold a $1.8 billion chunk of its software business to Indian IT company HCL (IBM, HCLTECH.NS)

As part of its efforts to focus on “high-value” products, IBM will sell seven software products to the Indian company HCL for $1.8 billion, the company announced Thursday. While HCL shares fell 5% following the news, Wall Street is feeling good (or at least, better) about IBM’s decision to sell. The products were part of a declining division, Cognitive Solutions, which IBM wants to return to profitability.
