John Dingell is delightful, from peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches to duck-sized Donald Trumps

SOUTHGATE, MI - FEBRUARY 24: U.S. Rep. John Dingell (D-MI) , 87, the longest serving member of Congress in U.S. history, announces his retirement at a luncheon February 24, 2014 in Southgate, Michigan. Post-congressional life has been good to John Dingell’s public image. Not that Dingell had a bad reputation then … it’s just that he is so very good at social media, and has time to show that off in retirement. That was on full display in a Reddit AMA Dingell did promoting his new book The Dean: The Best Seat in the House. Roll Call rounds up “the Dingell-est things” from that AMA, including confirmation that he likes peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches, a hell no on term limits (“the lazy voter’s way out”), and this:

“Would you rather fight 99 duck-sized Donald Trumps, or 1 Donald Trump-sized duck? one user asked.

“Doesn’t make a difference,” Dingell said. “They’re all fowl.”

Eventually, one user asked Dingell point blank: “Do you believe Trump is a racist or bigot? What are the implications of a political party electing a man like this as their leader.”

“1. Yes,” Dingell responded. “2. The Republican Party is now dead; it’s the Trump Party.”

He knows what he’s talking about. Except with the peanut butter and mayonnaise thing.
